Drugstore Love

DRUGSTORE LOVE
Brilliant days, they used to rip the fear from me
And it seemed that distances were clear to see
But love will come to pass
When you’re lyin’ on the green, green grass
Drugstore love
Drugstore love
Now the nights seem shorter and the air’s grown colder
When I look back I wish I’d been stronger, wish I’d been bolder
But love will come to pass
When you’re lyin’ on the green, green grass
Drugstore love
Drugstore love
I’m breakin’ down on my knees
Time stole my little victories
All the hours are swept aside
Time is stealin’ my midnight ride
Now the rain has set in and we’re getting older
And it’s rare that I take a look over my shoulder
But when I’m lyin’ on my back I recall the spell we were under
I recall the smell and the sights and the nights of wonder
But love will come to pass
When you’re lyin’ on the green, green grass
Drugstore love
Drugstore love
But love will come to pass
When we’re lyin’ on the green, green grass
Drugstore love
Drugstore love
Drugstore love
Drugstore love

Jack & Jane

JACK & JANE
Jack works at a drugstore, he’s an artist, and he wants to be free
Jane thinks he’s an example of how the gifted ones abuse their liberty
And if he’s so damn smart, she says, why can’t he get a more respectable job
He says because the thieves run free and good men die like dogs
And she says
Every time you speak
You’re gonna ease the pain all night
And if you go away
Oh, nothing will ever be right
I said ooh, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
That’s the way it goes
Jack he never wasted time thinkin’ past the age of twenty-four
Looks around his apartment and says man I thought there would be so much more
Jane says she will love Jack forever and ever no matter what he is
She knows what’s inside and she thinks he’d be great with kids
And she says
Every time you speak
You’re gonna ease the pain all night
And if you go away
Oh, nothing will ever be right
I said ooh, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
That’s the way it goes
But Jane ran away with another guy
Jack never expected it and she didn’t say why
She only said Jack I didn’t ask for this
But he made me feel good and I liked how he kissed
Jane’s in another man’s arms, it’s hell this way
He thinks she forgot him but it could be no other way
Jack doesn’t want to get older and wise
He’d like to live forever but he can’t live a lie
Jack strolled into work, you know he was thirty minutes late
The door had been unlocked and his boss had opened the gate
And he said why does a young man like you test fate?
And why in the world would you think that you’re great?
You throw away all the things that you must contemplate
They’re the only things that have any weight
Jack will get older and things will change
And his love for Jane will seem quite strange
And maybe one night she’ll appear in the rain
But she’ll never be able to ease the pain
She says
Every time you speak
You’re gonna ease the pain all night
But I had to go away
Oh, and nothing will ever be right
I said ooh, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
That’s the way it goes
I said ooh, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
That’s the way it goes

Give Me a Song

GIVE ME A SONG
Give me a song
Give me a crowd
Give me a voice and I’m gonna sing it
Give me a bar
And a guitar
Give me a chord and I’m gonna ring it
Don’t give me doubts
I want to sing out
I want to make something that’s there when I’m finished
These are my words
This is my time
And this is my song
Give me my friends
Give me my tunes
Give me my family and my commitments
Give me some hours
And some ideas
Give me some love to bring to the room
Don’t give me luck
And don’t give me chance
I just want to give a bit more than I’ve taken
These are my words
This is my time
And this is my song
So now my friends
It’s time to end
The chapter is done
And the book is a-closing
The beat goes on
The story remains
Another day brings another tale
Don’t give me doubts
I want to sing out
I want to make something that’s there when I’m finished
These are my words
This is my time
And this is my song

Laid to Waste

LAID TO WASTE
He was born an outlaw
Whipped up like a hurricane
With the fires of fury
Blowin’ all through his brain
And the power to love
Even though he’s lovin’ in sin
He’s got a hold on something
With all his might
The winds are blowin’ down through the night
He spent a spell in the early years as a junkie
But he can’t seem to shake the monkey
He’s so often drunk
You know he feels too much
It should have caused him to break
He turns away from the call of virtue
And he jumps on every offer vice makes
You can tell he has a heart
Even though his soul’s been laid to waste
He’s got skin of leather
And bones of steal
He’s got a will of substance
And a sense of what’s real
And his love for the finer things
Keeps him movin’ on
He drinks his life in
And swallows it whole
He’s all for pleasure
Without limits or control
He attracts the most beautiful and funky
His mind has gone to junk
He so often sunk
You know he feels too much
It should have caused him to break
He turns away from the call of virtue
And he jumps on every offer vice makes
You can tell he has a heart
Even though his soul’s been laid to waste
He’s too old now
To have died young
Will his decadence
Ever catch up to him?
Has he been cursed?
Or maybe he’s blessed
Either way his frenzied life’s a mess
He should be out in the desert
He’s playin’ cowboy in the city
He doesn’t seem quite human
When he aches it’s a pity
You know he feels too much
It should have caused him to break
He turns away, away, away from the call of virtue
And he jumps on every offer vice makes
You can tell he has a heart
Even though his soul’s been laid to waste

No Regrets

NO REGRETS
I’m gonna play mad piano in a pinstriped suit
Gonna pound till my fingers go white
Till I break the keys and I’m on my knees
And sayin’ it’s too late to fight
Yea, well I’m no guru, and I’m no prophet
But I know one truth that belies my age
The words should drip, the words should rip
And the words should jump from the page
The words should leap into the world
Before the ink starts to fade
It will fade
It will fade
No regrets
They get you nowhere fast
No regrets
It’s hard to make any of it last
No regrets
One thing ends, another has begun
Hey now we’re out there
We’re lyin’ in the sun
Well you fret ‘bout the words
That you said in your pledge
And you’re drivin’ the wheel
As you spin off the ledge
No regrets
You can’t repeat the past
Well your fire fades
But you learn to fight
And the night descends
And you scavenge for the light
You bang into walls
Rip the page, rip the night
Rip gravity with the stab of the knife
You should leap into the world
Even the heroes die in fight
You must fight
You must fight
No regrets
They get you nowhere fast
No regrets
It’s hard to make any of it last
No regrets
One thing ends, another has begun
Hey now we’re out there
We’re lyin’ in the sun
Well you fret ‘bout the words
That you said in your pledge
And you’re drivin’ the wheel
As you spin off the ledge
No regrets
You can’t repeat the past
No regrets
They get you nowhere fast
No regrets
You can’t make any of it last
No regrets
One thing ends, another has begun
Hey now we’re out there
We’re lyin’ in the sun
Well you fret ‘bout the words
That you said in your pledge
And you’re drivin’ the wheel
As you spin off the ledge
No regrets
You can’t repeat the past
No regrets
They get you nowhere fast
No regrets
You can’ repeat the past

YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF NERVE
You have been livin’ in a sleep
Foreign to the films your head must keep
Well, hey baby
You got a lot of nerve, you know
Your reach always exceeds your grasp
Don’t let your children grow up too fast
What a precocious little child
When she gets older won’t she be wild
Well, hey baby
You got a lot of nerve, you know
Your reach always exceeds your grasp
Don’t let your children grow up too fast
If she wants hope, don’t have her talk to me
I’ll ask too many questions, prove too many truths
And shatter too many dreams
Well, hey baby
You got a lot of nerve, you know
Your reach always exceeds your grasp
Don’t let your children grow up too fast

ROCK N’ ROLL! ALCOHOL! PARTY!
One more night
One more show
One more town
Here we go
Through the rain
In the van
Through the snow
Idaho
Get down!
She was warm
For my form
So we went
To the door
And we stayed
Up till four
You know we
Get up tomorrow
And we do it some more
Rock n’ roll!
Alcohol!
Party!
Whoo!
Rock n’ roll!
Alcohol!
Party!
Whoo!
I know we gotta go but before we hit the road, let’s party, let’s party
I know we gotta go but before we hit the road, let’s party, let’s party
One more night
One more show
One more town
Here we go
Through the rain
In the van
Through the snow
Rock-rock-rock-rock
Rock n’ roll!
Alcohol!
Party!
Whoo!
Rock n’ roll!
Alcohol!
Party!
Whoo!
I know we gotta go but before we hit the road, let’s party, let’s party
I know we gotta go but before we hit the road, let’s party, let’s party

Motivation Situation

MOTIVATION SITUATION
The lonesome tippler is leaning against the brick wall
Wounded by tragedies he prays he can forestall
He got all of her letters, he boxed up every one
The last words that she said, they rolled right off her tongue
If you find a situation where you need some motivation
Baby you can call on me
In the midst of devastation lie the seeds of jubilation
That can be the hardest thing to see
And all his hopes and dreams they play
Out every single night and disappear each
But if the pain and pride take it all away
I know you can still hear her say
If you find a situation where you need some motivation
Baby you can call on me
In the midst of devastation lie the seeds of jubilation
That can be the hardest thing to see
I had a dream
Woke up a long time ago
Ream after ream
Unfolds the story that is written in your soul
If you find a situation where you need some motivation
Baby you can call on me
In the midst of devastation lie the seeds of jubilation
That can be the hardest thing to see
If you find a situation where you need some motivation
Baby you can call on me
In the midst of devastation lie the seeds of jubilation
That can be the hardest thing to see

THE BALLAD OF HATTIE JAMES
Sweet Hattie James
She was a peach
She was older, and she was bolder
And she was just out of his reach
She taught young Jim
How to move and sing
On New York City nights
She could really swing her thing
She was lookin’ down back alleyways
He was lookin’ for a place to call home
There is nothin’ worse in life
Than being hopelessly alone
Time is on my side
Take me hand and match my stride
Baby you got a little more left in you
Join me tonight
On a moonlight drive
You still got time
To beat the young man’s blues
She was playin’ bad guitar
In a cheap ten table bar
When he listened and he christened her
As a rising star
She was able to teach
And he was able to learn
When you’re desperate to be something
You better watch it or you’ll get burned
When you’re lookin’ down back alleyways
And lookin’ for a place to call home
There is nothin’ worse in life
Than being hopelessly alone
Time is on my side
Take me hand and match my stride
Baby you got a little more left in you
Join me tonight
On a moonlight drive
You still got time
To beat the young man’s blues
The young man’s blues
She counted tips behind closed doors
While the waitress mopped the floors
Said I don’t know ‘bout shooting stars
But I think that you’ll go far
Time is on my side
Take me hand and match my stride
Baby you got a little more left in you
Join me tonight
On a moonlight drive
Join me tonight on moonlight drive
We still got time to beat the young man’s blues
The young man’s blues
The young man’s blues
